Monterrey

About every 3-6 months I get the travel bug. When I do I am impossible to live with until I can go somewhere. Anywhere will do. This summer we went to Monterrey and Carmel in California. Traveling with Shane is always fun. We are so similar and enjoy the same things. This time I really wanted to see the ocean again. Monterrey does not disappoint with its beautiful bay waters, scenic coastline, and fog everywhere. The ride there is not very scenic with the exception of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Mostly it is boring desert all across Nevada. The most exciting part of that drive was the poor bird that flew into the windshield and lunch at Battle Mountain where I could not help but laugh over the large "BM" letters painted on the mountain (the medical part of me finds humor where perhaps no one else does).
In Monterrey we visited the famous large aqaurium there in Cannery Row which was named for John Steinbeck's book (the author spent alot of time in the area during the height of its sardine days), and spent several evenings on Fishermans wharf to watch the pelicans and seals and eat yummy fresh seafood.  We took the 17 mile drive along Pebble Beach. We went out whale watching on the ocean. That was alot of fun. There were several humpback whales and one very large blue whale (so blue!) that we watched for quite a long time. There are also redwood forests that grow down along there and we took some hikes through those. One hike took us by Mcway Falls which drops directly down into the ocean. One day we drove several hours away all along the mountainous coastline to San Simeon. There we took a tour of Hearst Castle. So impressive and extravagant. Its built on the very top of a mountain and its just lovely. I tihnk Shane's very favorite place in the whole trip was the local cheeseshop we found in Carmel :). We had lunch at the Hogsbreath Inn while we were there in Carmel. That is that place that Clint Eastwood owns. I think he is still mayor of that town. These are the highlights of my perfect romantic getaway this summer. It was so good to come back and see the kids though. We missed them so much.
